Hamas rejects US envoy’s claims, affirms commitment to Gaza ceasefire talks
Defence affairs analysis
The Palestinian group Hamas expressed surprise Thursday at remarks made by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, who claimed the group showed no desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.
Hamas responded by reaffirming its commitment to continuing negotiations for a lasting truce.
In a statement, Hamas said it is “keen to continue negotiations and engage in efforts that help overcome obstacles and reach a permanent ceasefire agreement.”
Witkoff had earlier stated that Hamas's latest response to the ceasefire proposal “clearly shows” a lack of interest in ending the conflict. “We’ve recalled our team from Doha for consultations following Hamas’s latest reply,” he wrote on X, adding, “Despite the tremendous efforts by mediators, Hamas does not appear to be acting in good faith.”
He further noted, “We are now considering alternative options to bring the hostages home and create a more stable environment for Gaza’s residents. It is unfortunate that Hamas is behaving so selfishly. We remain determined to end this conflict and achieve lasting peace in Gaza.”
